Brain Games

Dear Readers,

B4 Literacy beleives that something should be learned everyday.

Here's another game to help develop your toddler's brain.

The game is called Alphabet shopping:
Write the alphabet down on the side of a large piece of paper. For each letter, ask your child to think of an everyday shopping item. If he/she can not think of one, use magines for pictures to paste on it to bring the pictures to life.

Increase your child's success rate

Dear Readers,

The decision to become a parent is an important one. And once the decision is made and the child is in the womb, there is no turning back. There are so many questions to be asked and so many answers and resources.

Add the following tips to your short list of things to do to increase your child's success rate:
1. Increase your children’s self-esteem by telling them how special they are.
2. Help your children to set goals for themselves in life, education, and careers.
3. Help your children to make correct choices Watch and learn your children, keep them involved in activities that they enjoy.
4. Keep your children optimistic about their future. Children are aware of what is going on in the world, so keep them encouraged about their futures.
5. Keep up the energy level. Encourage your children to eat healthy, drink plenty of water, exercise and plenty of sleep.

Brain Games

Dear Readers,

B4 Literacy will began introducing a series of Brain Games. These games will help to develop your baby's brain.

When a healthy baby is born, breathing, digestion and sleeping come naturally if all of these functions have developed correctly. But the areas of thinking, reasoning and remembering have to be developed in the early years of life. Research says that forming categories is difficult and demanding and needs plenty of practice.

Try this game with your toddler:
Choose a category such as fruit. Ask your child to think of three things he likes in that category.

Example: for fruit, he/she might say I like apples, peaches and bananas.

Repeat with three things he dislikes in the same category.

Mom, Dad, caregiver, sibling can play this game also with the toddler for more fun!

Quote of the Day

Dear Readers,

“To teach is to learn twice.”
- Joseph Joubert

This is a favorite quote for B4 Literacy. We believe that if one can share knowledge with others, they are reinforcing their knowledge.

Baby Sign Language

Dear Readers,

B4 Literacy believes that communication with baby is very important and helps to develop the intellectual growth.

Babies communicate by crying and the parent or caregiver goes through a process of elimination in order to determine what the baby needs or wants. Start this new technique that parents are using to communicate with their baby. It's called baby sign language.

Click on the link below to learn how to sign as you speak to your baby. Repetition is the key with babies and learning this new technique.

Reflexology through song

Dear Readers,

How many of you remember the children's song "This Little Piggy Went to Market" or a similar verison of a children's song that involved playing with your babies toes? This song is an interactive baby song and game that I saw my mom play with my little brother. These are the words to the song and the associated way of playing with the toes:

Mom singing and pulling on each toe the following words:
Big toe: This little piggy went to market;
Second toe: This little piggy stayed home;
Third toe: This little piggy had roast beef;
Fourth toe: This little piggy had none;
Baby toe: This little piggy cried wee,wee, wee all the way home.
The sinus area is located under the ball of each toe where mom would be rubbing.

Reading the following article about reflexology: http://reflexology.suite101.com/article.cfm/reflexology_for_children

Roll you mouse over the purple area on the toe for Sinus/Face area:

Was this song secretly passed down from generation to generation to prevent upper respirotory, sinus, ear infections?

Should you as a mother revive this song and perform the actions (refelxology) above to improve babys's overall health?

Post your answer or comment to the questions above in a blog to us.

What your new born knows at Birth

Dear Readers,
New born babies are amazing. Did you know that when a newborn is born they have over 100 billion brain cells. All of that brain power allows them to be able to know their language. They are able to recognize the language that is being spoken by their parents and relatives. That is why a newborn baby knows his mother's voice. Living Literacy: What did you read today?

February 1st: Do we, as parents and older siblings, read to each other for 20 minutes a day? Sometimes little ones learn more from what we do.

Don't let this first day of February pass without spending your 20 minutes living literacy or numeracy.

Use the "Comments" function to let us know what you read, to a child, a peer, or to yourself today for 20 minutes.
